From its beginnings in Vincennes in 1740 and in Sèvres in 1756, the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres produces and distributes art works in ceramics. These ancient crafts are transmitted generation by generation and have become unique nowadays. Member of the Comité Colbert since 1986, the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres represents faithfully the excellence of the ceramic craft and creation in France. The Manufacture always thrives for the excellence of its materials, which are made in situ and for the defense of its ancestral savoir-faire, meticulously preserved down through the centuries, while incorporating a personal taste of modernity.
In 1748, François Boucher was the first artist invited to create new projects for the Manufacture. Since then, many artists followed and the Manufacture is renowned as the place where contemporary artists can experience their projects and use their ancient savoir-faire and materials. The contemporary designs represent nowadays half of the Manufacture’s production. The other half concerns the editing of classical pieces referring to original editions by using traditional techniques. Taken together, the Manufacture preserves its dual purposes of tradition and modernity.
The Manufacture produces over 1000 pieces every year, in the 5 product categories in which it operates: arts of the table, vases and decorative objects, biscuit and stoneware, classical pieces, contemporary sculptures.
While promoting technological and artistic research in the field of ceramics, the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres is also preserving in its archives more than 250 years of porcelain production.
The Manufacture is following the tradition by inviting artists to design new shapes and decors. Here are some of these designers who particularly captured the attention of French-LifeStyle: Pierre Soulages, Jean Arp, Chu Teh-Chun, Johan Creten, Etienne-Maurice Falconet, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Zao Wou-ki.
In addition, it also produces annually outstanding pieces in limited edition, previously unreleased or out of stock, chosen from its historic repertoire.
